After months of renovation, Diergaarde Blijdorp presents a brand-new experience in the Oceanium from 5 July: Living with Wind Farms. This new addition completes the Oceanium with a focus on the North Sea. From colourful fish to towering wind turbines, discover how sustainable energy and nature can strengthen one another.

Wind at sea, life underwater

Wind energy plays an important role in the future of our energy supply. But how does it affect life in and around the North Sea? In this interactive exhibition, visitors can explore what happens beneath the surface. Between the blades and foundations of wind turbines, an unexpected world of life emerges. Think sea anemones, starfish, crabs and even sharks that reproduce around the base of a turbine. Old fruit trees have been transformed into reef-like structures where species such as rays and squid lay their eggs.

Radar game and artificial reefs

Visitors can experience for themselves how to generate energy while protecting birds and bats with the interactive Radar Game. By operating wind turbines strategically, both young and old can learn through play about the impact of wind farms above and below the surface. The exhibition also highlights how artificial reefs support a rich ecosystem filled with cod, lobsters and oysters.

Working with nature

The exhibition was developed in collaboration with Ecowende, an initiative by Eneco and Shell that focuses on nature-inclusive wind farms. Under the motto Teaming up with nature, they share their knowledge with scientists, policymakers and the wind sector to build a more sustainable future where nature and technology go hand in hand.
