In memoriam

John Manhave in The Rotterdam Yearbook

Exactly one year ago, on November 29, 2022, our former director and commissioner John Manhave passed away at the age of 79. As a prominent Rotterdammer, he is now being honoured in Het Rotterdams Jaarboek (The Rotterdam Yearbook), a publication of the Rotterdam City Archives and the Historical Society of Roterodamum.

In addition to articles about the history of Rotterdam, the Rotterdam Yearbook 2023 also offers space for In Memoriams in honour of prominent Rotterdammers who have passed away in the past year. John Manhave was such a prominent Rotterdammer.

His impressive social involvement in Rotterdam, whether it concerned the redesign and improvement of the quality of life in the centre, the CHIO or the well-being of patients at the Erasmus MC, was reason for the editors of the Rotterdam Yearbook to select him for an In Memoriam in the 2023 Yearbook.

Rotterdam was his passion. When it came to the city he was always serious and sometimes even obsessed. He was involved in numerous initiatives to upgrade the Rotterdam city centre and improve the quality of life.

Tribute by Con Schoenmakers

The In Memoriam for John was specially written by his good friend Con Schoenmakers, at the request of the editors. Unfortunately, Con passed away unexpectedly last September after a short illness. This sad loss makes us all the more grateful for the tribute he was able to leave for John Manhave.

Read the beautiful text by Con Schoenmakers about John Manhave in the Rotterdam Yearbook 2023 below (only in Dutch).
